Ghost ponds & pond restorations

Ghost ponds are old pond sites that have been deliberately infilled with soil and then usually farmed or scrubed over.

They can appear as depressions or damp patches of ground, or crop marks or be identified from first edition OS maps.

In addition to restoring neglected ancient farm ponds and creating new ones the Suffolk Wool Town Farms will be able to plan a restoration programme of to restore ghost ponds using the CSFF funded reports. Interest in ghost ponds was stimulated by the earlier meeting on farm archeology where members learned how to search old maps and read their landscapes.
